How we evaluate VPNs
Privacy Tools Hub is an independent comparison site. Recommendations are built from each provider’s currently published facts and a consistent scoring rubric — not from who pays the most. No provider can buy a ranking, a score, or a place on a shortlist.
How we evaluate each provider
- We start from the provider’s own official pages — pricing, server and country counts, device limits, refund terms, protocols, audits, and jurisdiction.
- We verify the figures that drive a decision against those official sources, and link them on every review under “Where these facts came from” so you can check them yourself.
- We date our product-fact reviews separately from pricing checks. An updated product-fact date does not mean every offer was confirmed.
- We weigh the trade-offs that matter in everyday use — device coverage, value over the full term, country reach, refund cushion, and privacy posture — rather than just listing spec sheets.
How we handle prices and uncertainty
Promotional monthly rates are usually the equivalent of a prepaid total. We identify the currency, term, upfront payment and renewal details when we can verify them. Missing or partially confirmed prices are marked on the price index; we do not turn an old promotion into a newly verified offer. Regional offers may differ. A price check records what the official page displayed, not a completed purchase.
Server counts and features are provider-reported, and availability can depend on the app or subscription tier. We distinguish audit announcements from reports we could inspect; each audit covers its stated scope and period. Where official sources conflict, we record the uncertainty instead of inventing a definitive answer.
What the scores mean
Each VPN gets editorial scores from 0–10 across four lenses: Overall, Streaming, Gaming, and Privacy. These are an editorial shorthand for how well a service fits a specific job — they are not lab-measured speed benchmarks, and we don’t present invented test numbers.
- Streaming — published location coverage, supported platforms and relevant features. We have not measured unblocking success or streaming speed.
- Gaming — documented protocol options, country coverage and device allowance. We have not measured latency or session stability.
- Privacy — independent audits, jurisdiction, protocol options, and how verifiable the no-logs position is.
- Overall — the arithmetic mean of Streaming, Gaming and Privacy, rounded to the nearest whole number. Equal displayed scores are ties.
